• Understanding business to become a more relevant advisor to your clients

    MBA IN A DAY

  • Overview

A one-day development program tailored for mid-career in-house and private practice lawyers wanting to become more relevant to their clients.

Presented by one of Australia's leading law firm consultants linked to Melbourne University Law School and an alumnus of Beaton Research & Consulting.

    Context and program objectives

Ten years of Beaton research shows that understanding a client's business and industry is one of the most critical factors in being preferred by clients, commanding a price premium and facilitating client loyalty.

You might be the most technically expert lawyer, but unless you can frame and communicate your advice in commercial terms, you're at a major disadvantage to others that can. Law school taught you the law, but it did little to develop your business knowledge and commerciality.

MBA IN A DAY aims to build your skills to understand business and provide commercially-relevant legal advice. Specific learning objectives of the program:

    • Learn the key commercial drivers of every organisation
    • Learn how lawyers impact these drivers
    • Learn practical tips to navigating through organisational culture and politics
    • Learn the key elements of strategy, planning and budgeting
    • Learn the basics of project management and financial management
    • Learn about the common pains and gains of business executives
    • Learn how to communicate with clients and frame your advice in a commercial context
    • Learn practical tips, tools and techniques for developing trusted client relationships..

    Program format

The MBA IN A DAY program includes:

    • A one-day interactive seminar led by Joel Barolsky
    • A business glossary - an explanation of key commercial terms and business buzzwords
    • Full copy of all teachings material used
    • Lunch and refreshments at seminar

NOTE: Participants will not receive a masters (MBA) qualification by doing this one day seminar. Most formal MBA programs take 12 to 18 months of full-time study. The term "MBA" has been used to describe management training in general.

    Commercial drivers

A key part of the seminar expands upon George Day's model of business performance. Day, a professor at Wharton Business School, states that EVERY for-profit enterprise has four main drivers:

    • Increasing sales and market share
    • Improving profit
    • Managing risk
    • Growing business value and sustainability.

The seminar will explore detail all of the practical strategies a client might adopt on each driver. For example, Improve profit has eight generic strategies. Having a good understanding of these strategies will allow you to appreciate the context of your legal advice and service. This framework facilitates a commercial conversation with clients and enables you to understand their major priorities, i.e. which combination of strategies are they focusing on.

The seminar will also cover how these drivers might vary for a government or a non-profit organisation.

Similar practical frameworks will be presented and discussed around strategic planning and budgeting, project management and financial management.

    Building trust

The seminar will focus on some of the "soft skills" to improve client communication and understanding. As illustrated in the drawing above, understanding is the overlap between the client revealing their needs and you really listening. MBA IN A DAY will cover practical client questioning and active listening techniques.

Developing trusted client relationships is a combination of both character and competence. The seminar will explore the factors that make up these two elements, as shown in the diagram below. It will provide practical tips and tools that develop trust.

MBA IN A DAY will cover the dynamics of organisational culture and politics. You will learn about the common pains and gains of business executives and how best to engage with them.

The original source of the communication drawing and the trust diagram is unknown.
